The US responded to Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro by saying he would “preserve in place” the coverage of financial sanctions towards the South American nation till concrete steps are taken to “return to democracy”.
“Till Maduro and his followers repress the Venezuelan folks and divert assets to deprave practices, we are going to stress the regime with financial sanctions,” a US State Division spokesman stated in an announcement on Monday.
Maduro requested US President Joe Biden to raise “all sanctions” imposed on Venezuela final Thursday (12), which he says are “legal”.
In his response, a US State Division spokesperson urged Maduro to take a seat on the platform of opposition unity to “resolve Venezuela’s issues and restore democracy and the rule of legislation within the nation.”
“Our sanctions towards Venezuela stay in place. We are going to proceed to impose sanctions on Venezuela in help of a return to democracy,” he burdened.
Maduro stated final week that over the previous eight years, “imperialism and its weak and extremist minions have stolen US$411 million a day from Venezuela,” which he described as “legal theft.”
